Basically, the only purpose of this website is to consolidate all your free food events into one page/calendar. Support us and we will support your hunger <3 (support does not include financial, merely tell your friends about us).

Good news everyone!
The arrrrrchives are having another event that includes free food and awesome history stuff. Don't be afraid to approach them! I've seen dozens of kids watch us as we ate cake and put on happy-birthday hats... what a said non-free-food world they live in.

"The Rebels, the Russian and the Railroad: The Life and Times of Frank Thomson"
The University Archives presents the exhibition "The Rebels, the Russian and the Railroad: The Life and Times of Frank Thomson" now through Friday, August 20, 2010 in W.W. Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets). An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Wednesday, June 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
Frank Thomson (1841-1899) spent his life working for the railroads, beginning as an apprentice and eventually working his way up to president of the Pennsylvania Railroad (the sixth president in the railroad's history). During the Civil War, he enlisted in the military and served as the chief assistant to Colonel Thomas A. Scott, assistant secretary of war for military railroads. After completing his military service in 1864, Thomson went on to become the manager of transportation of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was in charge of the visit of Russian Grand Duke Alexis and his entourage; the Grand Duke's tour across the United States and Canada from 1871 to 1872 was the largest official visit by Russia at the time.
Thomson's life chronicles the strategic significance of the railroads during the Civil War and the sustaining importance that the railroads have played in American history and politics. This exhibition tells Thomson's story through his own words, documents and photographs.

Children's Hospital/American Red Cross Blood Drive
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the American Red Cross are holding an emergency blood drive on Friday, July 2, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3535 Market Street, 16th floor.

Donors must be healthy, over 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood in the past 56 days. Those who donate blood at this drive will receive a certificate for a free slice of pizza at Pizza Rustica (3602 Chestnut Street).

"Rational Financial Strategies for Irrational Times: A Financial Literacy Workshop for Women"
The Office of Equality and Diversity, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Women’s Studies Program invite Drexel faculty and staff to the financial planning workshop “Rational Financial Strategies for Irrational Times: A Financial Literacy Workshop for Women” on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Intercultural Center, first floor (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
The workshop will be led by Carol Arnott, a certified financial planner whose practice focuses on women-in-transition. She will discuss retirement and investment funds.
A barbeque will be held behind the Intercultural Center from 4:45 to 5:25 p.m.
Space is limited and an RSVP is required by Thursday, July 1. Participants should indicate in their RSVP if they will attend the dinner and whether they prefer a vegetarian option.

Foreword

Let me just say, it feels good to be posting these from beyond the grave that is CAT 73. Last summer, I started free food at drexel after my friends and I bitched that there was no one source where we could see when free food events would be. Instead of doing the "free food tour", we wanted to know ahead of time, much like one of our heros did.

Free food at drexel graduated, all 4 of the originals and 1 member we added right before graduation, but have no fear! I have taken an administrative position at a company I once co-op'd for. On that note, damn you crappy job market and my need for money to remodel my house, which I only mention because that will be a free-food-at-my-house-in-jersey event (or free food at rutgers when I eventually get the money to enroll there and begin a higher degree).

Professions in User Experience and User‐Centered Design

The iSchool at Drexel, the College of Information Science and Technology, will host "Professions in User Experience and User‐Centered Design" on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Rush Building room 014 (30 N. 33rd Street).

Guest speaker Jack Bellis is an information designer in the User‐Centered Design department of Elsevier, the world's largest publisher of scientific and medical information. He has had
many roles and accomplishments in his software career, including having his own product, installing point‐of‐sale systems and technical writing, but they all seem to have been zeroing in on software design, making software as friendly and useful as possible. His work at Elsevier has led him to design medical information websites, mobile software and an iPhone app.

CoAS Presents Free Dinner and Discussion on Bordertown

To bring awareness to the tragedies occurring in Juárez, Mexico, the College of Arts and Sciences will present a screening of Bordertown as part of the free D3: Dinner and Discussion at Drexel series tonight, May 12, 2010 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the University Club, MacAlister Hall sixth floor (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Starring Jennifer Lopez and Antonio Banderas, Bordertown is based on a true story surrounding the multiple murders of young women in Juárez, Mexico. The movie follows the efforts of an American journalist (Lopez) and Mexican newspaper editor (Banderas) as they try to identify at least one of the Juárez murderers. Dinner and a discussion facilitated by CoAS faculty will follow the movie.

All students are invited to attend this lively, informal conversation over dinner.

This event is part of Ni Una Mas- The Juárez Murders (Not One More), a powerful Drexel-wide collaboration between academic, student and institutional departments intended to raise awareness about gender violence and, in particular, crimes against women in Juárez. The cornerstone of Ni Una Mas is an art exhibition featuring more than 70 works by 20 international artists, including Yoko Ono, Kiki Smith, Nancy Spero, Irish activist painter Brian Maguire and local artists Arlene Love and Jen Blazina. The exhibition will be held in the new home of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design's Leonard Pearlstein Gallery (3401 Filbert Street) Saturday, May 15 through Friday, July 16.

The Archives Reading Room will feature a display materials that document Childs’s life and lasting impact on Drexel. All who attend will have the opportunity to examine these 19th-century documents hands-on. Refreshments (including birthday cake) will be served in an adjoining room.

International Area Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences and Department of Culture and Communication will host "Who is European? African Migrations, Islam, and the New Europe" with guest speaker Lara Dotson Renta on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. in MacAlister Hall room 2019/2020 (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

African Muslim immigrants are migrating to Europe in unprecedented numbers. While the European Union struggles to re-assess its immigration and assimilation policies, it is also trying to reconcile its secular, yet historically Christian, identity with a growing Muslim population. This talk will focus on how immigrants are challenging what it means to be European via multi-lingual and transnational pop culture, media and visual arts.

International Cafe is a free, monthly forum that provides globally themed discussions that are open to the entire Drexel community. The Cafe discusses contemporary issues, presented with scholarly research that has an international component. Participants are invited to share ideas and experiences in this unique yet informal setting. Refreshments will be served.

After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, "Pop Idol" has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series Afghan Star and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For many, this is their first encounter with democracy. This timely film follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk all to become the nation's favorite singer. But will they attain the freedom they hope for in this vulnerable and traditional nation?

Tonight: One.25 Benefit Concert
Alpha Chi Rho will host the One.25 benefit concert for the Alexander-Williamson Endowed Memorial Scholarship tonight, April 23, 2010. A pre-concert party with free food and entertainment will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Buckley Green (33rd and Arch Streets). All are welcome to attend the party.
The concert will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church (2125 Chestnut Street) and will feature up-and-coming acts such as Starting Over, New Liberty, With the Punches, GrindCity and Nobody Yet. Tickets are $10, and a shuttle service will take students to the concert from the University City Main Campus.
The concert benefits the Alexander-Williamson Endowed Memorial Scholarship established in memory of Ian Alexander and John Williamson, who died in a car accident on January 25, 2009.

For those unfamiliar with philly, a bunch of restaurants in center city (etc.) are part of the same organization known as, in this example, as Starr Restaurants. Well it's that time of year again when they have their drive for philabundance and you can win dinner at all of the 13 Starr restaurants. Now, often they will give out treats on the street to draw people in, hence my posting of this (along with my love of several of the Starr restaurants).

Buzzing for Change Locks of Love Event
Buzzing for Change (B4C) will hold its Locks of Love event on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).
During a B4C event, participants shave their heads or cut their hair to raise awareness of cancer and to show support for individuals and the families of those suffering from cancer. The hair is donated to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for children who lose their hair due to disease.
B4C participants are asked to recruit monetary sponsorship for the Child Life Fund at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a fund that provides fun activities such as dance, music and art therapy and video games for children undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital. This year's B4C goal is to raise more than $10,000 for CHOP.
The first 200 participants will receive a free B4C t-shirt. Food, giveaways and music will be available for all participants.

"A Love for Everything: Education Untied at Westphal College of Media Arts & Design"
The Drexel Archives is hosting the exhibition "A Love for Everything: Education Untied at Westphal College of Media Arts & Design" now through Friday, May 14, 2010 at W.W. Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets). The exhibition, on display through May 14, 2010, highlights the developments that have shaped the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design and in turn Drexel University.
Anthony J. Drexel envisioned the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry as a place for rapid, intensive and practical business and industrial education. Initially, his idea was to establish an industrial college for women, but later decided that the Institute would be open to all, declaring, “I know that the world is going to change, and, therefore, the Institute must change with it, and I do not want to tie it up.” It would come as little surprise to him that what had begun in 1891 as the Department of Domestic Economy has evolved into the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design which now offers 14 majors, 12 minors and four graduate programs.
As a founding board member of Breastcancer.org, Antoinette Passo Westphal ‘59, Hon. '02, the college's namesake, felt that, “There is a love for everything.” As this exhibition demonstrates, her passion for life and Anthony Drexel's educational vision are realized in the College.

The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences: Community Dimension in Medicine class is holding a bone marrow registry drive today, April 12, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in New College Building room 3506 (245 N. 15th Street, Bldg. #5).
Many people suffering from leukemia and other blood-related diseases are in great need of bone marrow transplants. By registering with the National Bone Marrow Foundation, the public can provide them with life-saving bone marrow.
No needles are involved in the event; participants will register to join the National Bone Marrow Registry.

The College of Arts and Sciences and International Area Studies continue their International Film Fest with the award-winning movie Amélie on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 6 p.m. in Nesbitt Hall's Ruth Auditorium (33rd and Market Streets).
Amélie is the story of a girl whose childhood was suppressed by her father's mistaken concerns over a heart defect. With these concerns, Amélie has very little contact with other people, leading her to resort to her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty. As a young woman, Amélie moves to the central part of Paris and works as a waitress. After finding a lost treasure belonging to the former occupant of her apartment, she decides to return it to him. After seeing his reaction and his newfound perspective, Amélie decides to devote her life to the people around her and, along the way, discovers love.

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Seminar Series presents "Time Travel and Other Physics Digressions" with Dr. David Goldberg, associate professor of physics, on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Disque Hall room 109 (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).
Time travel is largely considered a figment of our imaginations, and yet Einstein's general theory of relativity contains equations with a number of solutions that point to time machines. Goldberg will explore the fundamental physics underlying time as we currently understand it, and will describe several "practical" designs for time machines. Philosophical issues and paradoxes raised by time travel scenarios will also be discussed in an effort to distinguish between science fiction that is fundamentally impossible and that which is just staggeringly out of reach.

Post-Graduation Public Service Opportunities Panel

Dear Seniors,
The Drexel Fellowships Office, in conjunction with the Center for Civic Engagement, will hold a panel discussion on post-graduation public service opportunities on Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Private Dining Room in the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
The panel discussion will feature representatives from various national and international service programs, including Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Philly Fellows, City Year, Philadelphia Teaching Fellows and the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.
While all students are welcome to attend, juniors and graduating seniors will benefit most from the event. Light refreshments will be provided.
